Juggling a Career and Motherhood


I was always taught that women can now “have it all” – meaning you can choose to have a career and a marriage and children if you want to. I always knew that’s what I wanted – to be the woman with the successful career and the white picket fence with happy kids and home-cooked meals all wrapped up into one. I never really thought about the details of how that worked, and what was involved in managing “it all” and that it wouldn’t all just magically come together. You can’t just keep adding more and more onto an already full plate without expecting something to topple off. It’s like an intricate puzzle that you have to figure out how to put together in a way that all of the pieces compliment each other without becoming overwhelming.

Nautical Nursery

So I have to admit, the thing I was the most excited about when it came to preparing for a baby to join our family was creating the nursery. I had very clear themes in mind for a boy or a girl. When we found out we’d be welcoming a sweet baby boy, it was full steam ahead with a nautical nursery for him. Being a full-time working mama, I had more limited time to work on this, so I started it early (basically right after we found out it was a boy…although I’d started pinning some stuff before that for both boy and girl nurseries since I had themes in mind). I highly recommend this for mamas with a lot of competing priorities (work, other kiddos, etc.) because it allowed it to never become stressful for me. I would pick 1 thing to focus on for a week, or even a few weeks for bigger items/decisions, and it was a really enjoyable, relaxing outlet for me that allowed me time to get excited about and feel close to baby.

Sedona Babymoon

We’ve always been big travelers. I even had what we jokingly called the “Baby Bucket List” of trips I wanted to take before we started a family (which we completed, by the way). So when we found out we were expecting our sweet baby boy, I had an extra thing to be excited about – planning a babymoon!
Unfortunately, my pregnancy coincided with the Zika outbreak, so all of the initial destinations that popped to mind were out of the question (picture relaxing on a beautiful, peaceful Caribbean beach). So we had to get creative.

All working mamas have to face the day that they return to work and spend a lot less time with their new baby on a daily basis. As that time started to creep closer for me, I actually found myself looking forward to it in a way. Of course I wasn’t excited to leave my baby, but I enjoy what I do and was looking forward to some sense of normalcy and intellectual, adult conversations. All of that said, I knew I wanted to find a way to keep my baby “close” while I was away from him.
